Audentes Fortuna Iuvat

January 21st, 2009

You may be wondering why I have chosen this Latin phrase as the name of my blog. The more erudite amongst you will know that it translates as ‘fortune favours the bold’ and is from Virgil’s Aeneid, Book 10, when the hero Aeneas addresses his army before leading them into battle. Pliny the Elder is also rumoured to have used this phrase in 79AD when leaving the docks at Pompeii to mount a rescue operation following the eruption of Vesuvius. On a very random note, it is also the motto of the Portugese Army Commandos.

On a personal level, it signifies for me the importance of self belief in thought, word and deed. Everybody is striving for something and without bold action then you will strive forever. So this is my late New Year’s Resolution – to be bold and pursue my dreams with enthusiasm and passion. I’ll keep you posted!

Why am I here?

January 20th, 2009

Well hello interwebs! After long deliberation, I have decided to join the blogosphere; very behind the times I know! So, why have I decided to finally take the plunge and what will I be twittering on about?

I have recently discovered that I am a writer. I have a talent and a passion which I wish to indulge, develop and enjoy. Blogging now appears to be a literary genre of its own and so I shall be participating, in conjunction with the other writing work that I am doing. I don’t quite have the idea yet for the novel, so I am writing short stories and articles galore to strengthen my creative muscle.

As for subject matter, to a large extent that remains to be seen. I anticipate that there will be much commentary on my life, opinions and current affairs; of course written from a largely biased point of view! If nobody ever finds me here in this lonely corner of the web then I shall not be discouraged, I shall carry on regardless because ultimately I am writing here for my own benefit and enjoyment. However, if you are reading this, then welcome aboard!
